Solvents
Substances used in dissolving solids and keeping them in a liquid state are solvents. They can be found in day-to-day objects, such as cosmetics, adhesives, or ink.
Solvents usually have a liquid form but can also be a solid, a gas, or a supercritical fluid. Temperature is a feature which dictates the quantity of solute that can dissolve in a specific volume of solvent.
Organic solvents are widely used
- in dry cleaning – for instance, tetrachloroethylene,
- as paint thinners – for example, toluene, turpentine,
- as nail polish removers,
- as glue solvents (acetone, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate),
- in spot removers for example hexane, petrol ether,
- in detergents – citrus terpenes
- in perfumes – ethanol
Solvents can also be found in lacquers, inks, coatings, tyres, gloves, aromas, vitamins, cleaners, disinfectants, adhesives, toiletries, cosmetics, electronics and pharmaceuticals.
