The production of caustic soda happens in cell rooms. A powerful electric current is passed through a brine solution (salt dissolved in water). The chemical reaction results in the production of chlorine and caustic soda, or chlorine and caustic potash, in fixed ratios. Also, a small amount of hydrogen is produced, which serves as fuel or a constituent of other chemical applications.

Caustic soda production provides a liquid and solid form of the chemical. Liquid caustic soda serves as a strong base and as a chemical reagent, a pH-regulator, an ion exchange resin regenerating agent, a catalyst and an etching and cleaning agent. The solid form of caustic soda does not significantly differ in properties. However, its manufacture involves different processes. It can be extracted by the evaporation of water from liquid caustic soda. The next step consists of solidification into micro pearls.
