As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change and the need to transition to cleaner energy sources, methanol has emerged not only as a fuel for transportation but also as a critical component in the pursuit of a circular economy. Innovations in methanol production, especially the development of “green methanol,” are helping to drive this shift.
Green methanol is methanol that is produced using renewable energy sources, as opposed to conventional methods that rely on fossil fuels such as natural gas. There are several ways to produce green methanol, including using biomass, converting carbon dioxide captured from industrial emissions, or combining CO2 with hydrogen produced from renewable electricity (a process known as “Power-to-X”).
By using renewable sources, the production of green methanol can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional methods. For example, when methanol is made from captured CO2 and green hydrogen, it offers a carbon-neutral or even carbon-negative solution, depending on the process.
