Polystyrene

Polystyrene is a result of a reaction called the polymerization of styrene monomer. As a thermoplastic resin, polystyrene serves multiple purposes and is used in various sectors, e.g., construction, electronics, household appliances, toys, packaging and disposables (e.g., cutlery, cups).

Polystyrene comes in two types:

  • crystal polystyrene, called straight, or general purpose polystyrene (GPPS); it is used for example in food packaging as it is an elastic-plastic,
  • high-impact polystyrene (HIPS). As a durable plastic, it is widely used in household appliances, for example, refrigerators.

Polystyrene is the result of combining benzene (an aromatic hydrocarbon) with ethylene.
