Acetyls
Being formed of a part of a molecule (as opposed to the molecule itself), acetyls constitute a group of interesting petrochemical products.
The acetyl group consists of:
- The carbonyl group – consists of a carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom
- The alkyl group – consists of carbons and hydrogens
Products containing Acetyls are used by a variety of industries, such as the construction industry and agriculture. Acetyls are also a part of products, such as food flavouring, preservatives, pharmaceuticals, paints, packaging and adhesives.
The most commonly used form of acetyls is acetic acid, which contains significant amounts of vinegar. This component is made by an attachment of the acetyl group to an OH group. Almost every existing industry uses acetic acid. One of its biggest advantages is its versatility making it useful in many applications.
Another popular acetyl is polyester fibre, used in the production of many clothes. As an important chemical reagent and industrial chemical it is widely used in the production of soft drink bottles (PET), vinyl acetate monomer (VAM) and purified terephthalic acid (PTA). It is also used in the production of synthetic fibres, fabrics, household items, food, and many more spheres of our daily life.
One more significant component of acetyls is acetic anhydride. It aids in the acetylation of cellulose and the production of many pharmaceuticals and intermediates.
